You have to go-Jonker street--鸡场街

The entrance of the Jonker street.
Jonker street is like Melaka's China Town. It's my favourite street untill now!I really love it and if u come to Melaka,u absolutely cannot miss it!

I'm going to introduce Jonker street, first, let me explain to u about the name of the street.

This street has a lot of names, but the famous two are Jonker street and 鸡场街.

Jonker street is like aristocratic Holland street.I don't really know the story. But the Chinese name"鸡场街“,the word is "Chicken house street",it's so weird! At first i don't know why Melaka's China Town has this name!So when i came here,i asked a shopkeeper of an antique shop, she's a Malaysia Chinese.

"It's from Fujian(a province of China, alot of Malaysia Chinese are from there)localism,at first, this street's name was '街场街(jie chang jie),it means bustling street, but in Fujian localism, the prounciation is '鸡场街(ji chang jie),and in this street most of business people were from Fujian,so it's named '鸡场街‘."

Really funny coincidence,isn't it?

Jonker street is near the Melaka river,if u are in the downtown,u can walk their about 15 minutes,it's a really long street, always have a lot of people, you can find it easily.

(The address :Jalan Hang Jebat,75200 Melaka.Tel:60-6-2848 282.U can go there by bus, from Melaka sentral terminal, take Panorama bus,to Baba Nyonya Heritage.U can spent whole day in there, really nice place!)

Jonker street,afternoon.

In Jonker street, it seemed like coming back  Chinese old time.Maybe 50 or 60 years ago,it's really difficult to find a place like that even in China!

I visited a lot of stores here, everyone is particular and i was attracted in everywhere!

There's a really amazing Nyonya traditional clothes shop, the shopkeeper was really friendly, even u didn't buy anything she was wiling to talk to u alot.

Melaka has a different culture, especially in Jonker street,u can find it everywhere,it's Baba and Nyonya.

About 600 years ago,China is in Ming Dynasty,a lot of people from south of China moved to Melaka, they settled in here, and got married with the local person.

They were here from  generation to generation, theirs descedants are called Baba(for man)or Nyonya(for woman).

This culture is so special, coz it mixed Chinese culture and Malay culture.

When i went into the shop,i was struck by the colorful clothes! They are all handmade by local Nyonya.Really gorgeous!(But the price is really expensive!Every dress is around 700RM!I cannot afford it but it really worths it!If u have enough money,my advice is just buy it!It worths to collcect!)

A old Chinese Printer. The shopkeeper told us she's a Nyonya, and the dress can give your son and your grandson from generation to generation.(That shop cannot take pic,so pity!)

In Jonker street,u can find a lot of interested stores and a lot of local food!Really delicious!U can find many old Chinese classic constructs,u can image your father and mother's time.U can buy the most special local souvenirs.

In an antique shop.Made by wood.
You can take nice pic everywhere, even an old door, even an old mailbox.

Time in Jonker street is soft and quiet, like the Melaka river, never change.

(Only on Friday ,Sunday and Saturday the Jonker street has night market,it starts from 5pm,in the night market,You will not only see the Melaka amorous feelings, but also can taste the most local street-side snack! But pay attention to your bag and phone, coz it's really crowded there!)

Cannot find a word to describe that nice!

If u come to Melaka but miss Jonker street, you will feel really pity!U can find everything u want here, and it's absolutely a poetic stop!
